DON'T SHOP 'TIL YOU DROP

For some, shopping is a passion. For others, shopping is a frustration, a time-consuming chore of countless choices and tough decisions. A new trend capitalizes on both attitudes toward shopping: the passionate now cater to the frustrated as personal shoppers.

The concept of personal shoppers is a fashion movement in an era where the everyday routines of work, family and miscellaneous commitments leave us asking, "where did the day go?" Now, instead of penciling in a shopping session for the latest addition to your wardrobe or for that perfect gift, hire someone else with excellent taste to do it for you. A personal shopper will listen to your ideas, gather items that fit your budget and desires, and present you with an array of choices.

The convenience doesn't stop there. Requests are accepted over the phone, by fax, email or appointment. If you're unable to visit Bloomingdale's private show room, the store's personal shoppers will bring items to your home or office. At Neiman Marcus, you can request digital photos via email, where you can make your selection and purchase online, then receive the merchandise in the mail.

The advantages of personal shoppers extend far beyond convenience.

Personal shoppers offer expertise on the latest fashions and trends to ensure that you and your home are always in style. They know their entire store and product lines inside-and-out, and may have access to popular wait-listed items. Personal shoppers keep a record of the special occasions in your life and send reminders for birthdays, holidays and anniversaries. They are also an excellent resource for wedding gifts and holiday shopping lists.

What's more, most personal shoppers are free!

Bloomingdale's, Neiman Marcus and other department stores, like Nordstrom, Saks Fifth Avenue and Macy's, offer personal shopping as a courtesy to customers. There is no obligation to buy, no minimum purchase requirement, and no service fee. Of course, the items available are limited to the store's product selection.

For buyers seeking merchandise from multiple retailers, personal shopping companies such as I've Been Dressed in New York City, will shop the entire town. Of course, they charge as much as $500 for a five-hour shopping session, but they'll treat you to lunch and free transportation. I've Been Dressed also provides closet evaluations, image consultations, shopping parties and maternity makeovers.

How to get started with your own personal shopper:

  1. Contact your favorite department stores and inquire about personal shopping services.
  2. Provide a thorough profile of your likes, dislikes, measurements, preference of designers, favorite colors, and personal styles.
  3. Advise about what items you're looking for and the occasion you'll use them for.
  4. Clarify your budget and how you intend to pay for the items (it is also helpful to understand the retailer's return policy).
  5. Decide when and where you'll be available to review your personal shopper's selections.
  6. If you're purchasing the items online or over the telephone, indicate where you want the merchandise sent.
